By being fractionally smaller than the X3, BMW's smallest SUV will be a better match to the Tiguan. Which one will offer a more livable package remains to be seen. Performance wise, the X1 will have an edge. It gets the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel as the X3.
The sticking point would be price. In imported form, the X1 could cost just as much as today's Thai-built X3 between B3.3-3.8m. The only way the X1 can outwit the Tiguan in price is to head for the wrench-holders in Rayong.
